BEACHES ON THE WESTSIDE
Marina del Rey—Mother’s Beach
Mother’s Beach isn’t on the ocean, but it easily makes the list of best beaches on the Westside. It’s a popular sandy stretch along the harbor that families love because there are no waves. There are, however, sheltered picnic tables, barbecue grills and playground equipment. Santa Monica State Beach
Keep in mind that the closer you get to the Santa Monica Pier, the more crowded the beach will be. On the Pier itself, you have a ton of restaurants from casual to fancy, carnival games and rides, and a slew of events all summer. For a more serene Santa Monica Beach experience, head up the coast a bit.
Dockweiler is another one of the best beaches on the Westside and a great choice for families—or anyone who would get a kick out of watching the planes overhead while they’re relaxing on the sand or swimming or surfing in the ocean. You can also play a game on the beach volleyball courts and wind down the day with a bonfire—one of the few beaches around where this is allowed.
“People-watching is the raison d’être at Venice Beach, which effectively continues from the southern end of Santa Monica Beach without a break,” said Timeout. The Boardwalk will be crowded, but it’s still something to experience, not to mention an opportunity to “skate or cycle, watch or play volleyball or basketball, and check out the pumped-up gym bunnies who work out at Muscle Beach.”
HIKING SPOTS
You have some great options for hiking on the Westside, with trails that offers a variety of difficulty levels and the bonus of some truly spectacular views.
Franklin Canyon Park spans 605 acres in Beverly Hills and “features over five miles of hiking trails,” said Discover Los Angeles. They recommend the one-mile (round trip) Discovery Trail, which features Franklin Canyon Lake and the Sooky Goldman Nature Center. Or, choose a more challenging option, “such as the Hastain Trail, which rises to offer views from West L.A. to the Pacific.”
A few fun facts about this hiking spot: “Pop culture fans will likely recognize Franklin Canyon Park, which is frequently used as a TV and film location, including the famous hitchhiking scene from It Happened One Night with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. The three-acre Franklin Lake was the ‘fishing hole’ in the opening credits of The Andy Griffith Show, as well as the lagoon in the Universal Studios horror classic Creature from the Black Lagoon.”

The side route to Inspiration Point is “a quick detour and worth the effort…for some spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, the L.A. Basin and the Santa Monica Mountains,” said Discover Los Angeles.
Head up the coast a bit to Pacific Palisades for a seven-mile hike from Los Liones Trail to Parker Mesa Overlook. When you get to the end, you’ll be treated to some incredible views that span the hillside, the city, the curve of the coastline, and the bright blue Pacific Ocean.
Beware that this hike includes some tough sections. “Switchbacks and steep hill climbs characterize the first two miles of the Topanga State Park hike,” they said. “With an elevation gain of about 1,300 feet, it’s definitely a tougher climb. But you can find your reward as you gaze out from a vantage point atop the bluff. Enjoy a picnic lunch or relax on a bench while taking in the overlook.”
The payoff at the end of this Malibu hike: The gorgeous waterfall. At 4.2 miles round-trip, Escondido Canyon offers a “gradual climb that drifts in and out of tree covering, alongside canyon walls. Soon, you’ll be standing at the base of the 50-foot-high Escondido Falls, admiring the multi-tiered cataract flowing over moss-covered rocks.”
Depending on the water level, you might be able to cool off in the pool that the falls empty into, and climb the rocks for an even better view. Pro tip: Wear waterproof shoes and bring extra socks. You’re going to get your feet wet.
