If you’ve never witnessed the sport of competitive canoeing, it’s time to get your feet wet! Or keep them dry on the sand—it’s your choice. Either way, the Kahanamoku Klassic Outrigger Canoe Race is the place to be on Saturday, June 1 at Mother’s Beach in Marina del Rey. Competitive paddling is a growing sport, and this event regularly draws thousands of onlookers. The full Open Race, for advanced canoers, is 11 miles long and starts at 8am. But don’t let the early start time scare you—there are several more races throughout the day, including courses for novices, women, and men, This event also includes food for purchase, vendors selling everything from paddling equipment to art, jewelry, and clothing, and a raffle and silent auction. It wraps up with a ceremony at 2:30 pm, where more than 650 awards for first, second, and third-place winners in all categories will be handed out.
